Ensuring that Children Get the Educational Services They Need

The Law Offices of Alexandra D Ferguson located in Boulder, Colorado serve parents and their children with disabilities in protecting their education rights. Special education in particular is a complicated and continually changing area of law.  It is understandable that parents and educators alike may not know how to effectively navigate special education law and regulations.  Our goal is to help parents access appropriate educational services for their children in order for them to be successful learners in school.  

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a federal law first enacted in 1975, children with disabilities from ages 0-21 are entitled to early intervention services (EI) or a free appropriate public education (FAPE).  Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), enacted in 1990, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the first disability civil rights law enacted in 1973, children with disabilities must be offered accommodations that meet their unique needs in order to be able to participate in public school.  We help parents understand these rights and become effective advocates on behalf of their children.  

In our practice, we assist parents in the entire process protecting these rights for their children, which includes obtaining appropriate evaluations, developing an appropriate Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP), finding an appropriate public school placement or, if necessary, a publicly funded private school placement.  We advocate on behalf of you and your child to ensure that your child receives the services to which s/he is entitled that will support your child’s development, succeed in school and maximize his/her independence.  When disputes with school districts happen, we work to amicably resolve cases without the need for a hearing.  However, when litigation is necessary, we are ready to advocate vigorously on behalf of parents and their children.
